North Island Wildlife Recovery
Peter and Dave gave us an excellent lesson this afternoon on owl adaptations and even the chance to dissect owl pellets (the undigested remains of prey such as bones and fur.) In the pellets we found a rat skull, lots of different tiny bones, and feathers/fur. We tried to piece together the bones to fit the diagram. It was so neat to see a live owl so close and to be able to learn about all of the adaptations that it has made such as feather colour, beak, talons, and eyes. Did you know that a barred owl's eyes can catch 10 times as much light as humans? Wow!
