Project Wet: Molecules in Motion (#3)

Today we played a game called "Molecules in Motion" from Project Wet as a D.P.A. break. We used visuals and discussion to compare water in its three states. We talked about where we would find these different forms of water:

Gas: condensation on the bus windows, steam from boiling water, condensation on the bathroom mirror after a shower

Liquid: the water that we drink

Solid: ice cubes in the freezer, icicles off the roof in the winter

We looked at what the molecules looked like in each state:

And finally, we BECAME the molecules! Students all started out in solid form and were given a red scarf if they were heated one level to become liquid. If they were given another red scarf, they became a gas. Alternatively, if they were handed a blue scarf, they were frozen back into a solid. Children moved around the room accordingly:

Solid: Stand still and huddled with others at the carpet area

Liquid: Slow motion movement still at the carpet area

Gas: free movement around the room

Wow what a fun movement activity to reinforce our concept that water consists of individual molecules!
