Happy First Day of School!

Today I got to meet seven of my Grade Six students. The students were welcomed with morning song (I'm still learning) and we proceeded to the classroom to get to know one another. I started with a four question quiz that went something like this:

1) Your favourite summer activity
2) Your favourite song
3) Which animal would you be if you could be any in the world?
4) Your hero

Students posted their sticky notes on the board and I used these for attendance when the principal entered. Next, I asked the students if they would like to know a little more about the strange new teacher standing in front of them. They laughed and I showed a powerpoint "About Me," which they will get the chance to do later in the week as well.

Next, we did a circle "About You" activity, where the students shared their summer activities and interesting facts and other students were prompted to ask questions.

One student recorded our school leadership ideas (since we will be taking a Student Council position). We had a good brainstorm, and we managed to find time to fill out our "Facebook Profile Page" "About Me" sheet. We finished the morning off with a "Human Knot," where we all had to try and untangle ourselves from a knot of hand-holds. The students were so successful at untying themselves, that I had to add a challenge!

Recess and snack were each 10 minutes, then we finished our Facebook Profile Pages and we moved on to colouring welcome signs in both English and Nuu-Chah-Nulth. We posted the signs together around the school for other students and parents to feel welcome in the school. Enough with colouring, we did some fun DPA activities, then we finished the day with a short assessment of student learning styles and a fun adjective activity:

With whiteboard markers, classmates wrote positive descriptive words about their friends.

Unfortunately, that's all for today! We had a wonderful 1/2 day with 1/2 of the class. Tomorrow we will have a full day, but still only with Grade 6's.

We will be beginning our recycling leadership program, reviewing parts of sentences through mad libs, and we will begin work on our "About Me" powerpoints. Thursday will be code of conduct, expectations, and routine extensive, as well as "Get to Know You" activities for the Grade 5's.
